Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained

Queensland requires an occupational licence for anyone on the tools and a contractor licence for the business carrying the job, and the QBCC grants both. The first shows the holder is trained and competent. The second shows the business can carry the job financially and is set up to run it properly.

Three licence classes matter to a homeowner:

  • A plumber's licence authorises the plumbing work itself, minus the few jobs carrying their own endorsement.
  • A drainer's licence authorises drainage below ground level, with the same exception.
  • Gas work needs its own class: only a licensed gasfitter may install, alter, repair, service, test or certify gas systems and their pipework.

You're entitled to sight that gas licence before gas work starts on your property. Our gas fitting work page sets out the gas jobs we take on.

How Plumbing Work Is Regulated in Queensland

Oversight splits between the QBCC and the City of Moreton Bay. The QBCC licenses the trade, runs the notifiable work register and chases unlicensed work, while the council assesses applications, grants permits and sends inspectors.

Regulated work comes in three categories: work needing a permit, work that must be notified, and minor work. All three must be done by a plumber or drainer holding a licence. The paperwork you receive depends on the job:

  • After notifiable work, the owner or whoever engaged the plumber receives the Form 4 copy, and the QBCC's online register shows whether one was lodged for your address.
  • For newly installed or altered gas systems, the gasfitter gives the owner a compliance certificate for the gas system straight away, and the gas network operator receives a copy within 5 days.
  • You can ask for a council inspection at any stage of the job. An inspector may attend with the occupier's consent if the council makes contact within 1 year of the QBCC receiving the notice.

Plumbing Across Neighbouring Suburbs

The same run covers the suburbs next door most weeks. A dripping mixer near Wally Strong Park and a septic service on a western acreage block both sit on it, and so do the Wamuran and Lilywood rounds.

Everything we cover is listed on our suburbs we cover page. Bigger jobs like a bathroom renovation get the same booking process as a leaking tap.

How a Plumbing Job Runs From Call to Finish

  1. 1

    The call

Ring (07) 3523 6417 or use the contact form. A few details up front mean the right gear comes on the first trip.

  2. 2

    The diagnosis

We examine the fixture, the pipes and the supply, and name the fault before anything gets touched. You hear what's wrong and why.

  3. 3

    The quote

You get a fixed quote before any work starts, with flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees. Nothing begins until you approve the figure.

  4. 4

    The work and the checks

We carry out the repair or installation, then test it. We run a new tap, flush a drain, check a gas connection.

  5. 5

    The paperwork and payment

Any Form 4 or gas certificate goes to you, and payment lands at the end: card and EFTPOS on site, or Fix now, pay later.

Questions People Ask About Our Plumbers

Call (07) 3523 6417

What is the difference between a plumber and a drainer?

Drainers hold the licence for below-ground drainage, and plumbers hold the licence for the plumbing itself. Both licences come from the QBCC, and each excludes the few jobs that need a separate endorsement.

Is every job in Bellmere done by a licensed plumber?

Yes, every job is done by a licensed plumber under QBCC No: 15024607, and we're licensed and insured.

Who checks plumbing work in a Bellmere home?

The City of Moreton Bay grants permits and sends inspectors, and you can ask for an inspection of notifiable work. The QBCC looks after licensing and keeps the record of notifiable work.

Do you work on units and rentals as well as houses?

Yes, houses, units and rentals all get the same service. Tenants go through their agent for approval, and unit owners may need body corporate sign-off on shared pipes.
